I love Psalms 23.
Psalm 23: A Psalm of David.
23 The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.2
4 Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,[c]
I will fear no evil,
for you are with me;
your rod and your staff,
they comfort me.
5 You prepare a table before me
in the presence of my enemies;
you anoint my head with oil;
my cup overflows.
6 Surely[d] goodness and mercy[e] shall follow me
all the days of my life,
and I shall dwell[f] in the house of the Lord
Let’s break down Psalm 23:
He makes me to lie down in green pastures. This is present food for my soul. Today there is food for me in Christ. Food fed to me by Christ that no circumstance or person can take from me. Praise the Lord.
He leads me beside still waters. This is rest for my soul. Today, there are still waters of peace with God bought by the blood of Jesus that cannot be disrupted by any threat of sin or Satan. He restores my soul. This is present forgiveness of all my sins. Today I have cleansing from all unrighteousness and fellowship with God.
He leads me in paths of righteousness for His name’s sake. This is the direction for the day. In every twist and turn of God’s providence today, there is something of who God is for me to learn and something of His good way for me to walk in as defined by the 10 Commandments. Today, God is calling me to plant my footsteps in the path of love to God and love to men as I think and live in every circumstance He brings my way.
And also when (not if – all believers walk through times of trial) I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil for you are with me. Jesus is with me in the valley. He has passed through the valley to the other side and will bring me safely through.
Your rod and your staff, they comfort me. The symbols of the Shepherds protection and care are proof of His presence with me and for me. Nothing can touch me without His permission and He will never allow me to be utterly destroyed even if I die. Then I will be in the presence of my Lord and Savior for all of eternity.
Thankful for Psalms that speak comfort in times of trial, that show restoration, hope, and the joy we have in Christ. Thankful for Psalms that share brokenness so openly and share in the hope of the cross and the promises of the Lord who is, has always been and forever will be faithful.
