David’s remedy for the despairing and weary soul (in Psalm 43) is to hope in God. Meditate on His goodness, faithfulness, and love. Meditate on his light and truth that are meant to guide you in time of trouble. Only by lifting our thoughts + our eyes to the Lord will we be able to praise Him appropriately!
God has given abundant promises to His people—promises of endurance, perseverance, eternal security. During times of despair, we should meditate on these, fixing our hope on God’s grace and precious gifts. It is too easy to be overcome by our feelings during difficult times; therefore, we must turn our thoughts toward God in faith, even when we do not “feel” like it, putting our hope in the only One who can lift our downcast souls. Lift your eyes to Jesus!
Psalm 43, a Psalm of David: Vindicate me, O God, and defend my cause against an ungodly people, from the deceitful and unjust man deliver me!
For you are the God in whom I take refuge; why have you rejected me? Why do I go about mourning because of the oppression of the enemy?
Send out your light and your truth; let them lead me; let them bring me to your holy hill and to your dwelling!
Then I will go to the altar of God, to God my exceeding joy, and I will praise you with the lyre, O God, my God.
Why are you cast down, O my soul, and why are you in turmoil within me? Hope in God; for I shall again praise him, my salvation and my God.
