It can feel intimidating to open a book as big as the Bible and begin studying it verse by verse. With so many books, chapters, historical events, and genres, you may wonder where to begin or whether you’ll ever truly understand what you’re reading.
If you’ve ever felt overwhelmed by studying Scripture, take heart.
God wants you to know Him.
“You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart.” — Jeremiah 29:13 (ESV)
The God who created you has not hidden Himself from you. He has graciously revealed Himself through His Word so that you might know Him, love Him, and walk faithfully with Him.
God Will Equip You to Understand His Word
Because God desires for His children to know Him, we can trust that He will also equip us for what He calls us to do.
Scripture tells us that if we lack wisdom, we can ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach (James 1:5). As we prayerfully open our Bibles, the Holy Spirit helps us understand God’s truth and applies it to our hearts.
Friend, this is such good news.
That means you can study God’s Word.
You can ask Him for wisdom.
You can grow in your understanding of Scripture.
You don’t have to be a Bible scholar or seminary graduate to faithfully study God’s Word. The Lord delights in revealing Himself to His people.
Learning to Study the Bible Takes Practice
Learning to study the Bible is a lot like learning to ride a bike.
At first, it can feel awkward and overwhelming. You may not know where to start, what questions to ask, or how all the pieces fit together.
But over time, as you continue faithfully opening God’s Word, something beautiful happens.
You begin to recognize God’s character.
You start seeing the grand story of redemption woven throughout Scripture.
Your confidence grows.
And your love for Christ deepens.
The more time you spend in God’s Word, the more you realize there is always more to discover. Scripture is an endless treasure because it reveals an infinite Savior.
God’s Word Is Life-Giving
The Bible isn’t simply a book full of information.
It is living and active.
It offers hope to the weary, wisdom to the uncertain, comfort to the hurting, and truth for every season of life.
Whether you spend five minutes reading Scripture before work or an hour slowly studying a passage, every moment spent knowing Christ through His Word is time well spent.
As we faithfully return to the Scriptures day after day, God transforms us to become more like His Son.
May we seek to know Christ more through the pages of His Word—not simply to gain knowledge, but to grow in love for the One who has loved us first.
May we one day echo the words of the psalmist with joyful confidence:
“How sweet are your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth! Through your precepts I get understanding; therefore I hate every false way. Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” — Psalm 119:103–105 (ESV)
May God’s Word become sweeter to us with every page we turn, every chapter we read, and every day we spend walking with Christ.
